I recently added a cd recorder to my karaoke equipment.  I thought I could offer my karaoke customers an opportunity to record themselves on a CD for a small fee.  I had planned to use gold blank cd's and print their name and song titles on each one with a disc title printer, making it real professional looking.  After I have purchased all of this equipment I was wondering if I am doing something illegal with copyright laws or something.  Each recorded CD will have printed on it "For Pesonal Use Only".  Has anyone done this that can help me out?

Technically speaking, it is illegal. But so is copying any of your own discs to your own computer (thereby changing the format) for your own use, which many of us do.

I used to record customers on cassettes with an Onkyo dual cassette recorder mounted in my rack and tied into the mixer. I slapped a pre-printed label with my show's logo and website on the front and handed them out as freebies. That was illegal, according to companies like Sound Choice.

On the other hand, we all go a couple of miles over the speed limit on occasion. It's all a question of enforcement. Unless you're raking in big bucks on this venture, I doubt you will be approached by the Karaoke Kops and fined for your trespasses.
